Make sure you have the best possible team. The business should dedicate the best and the brightest employees they have to the project. Engage experienced consultants who know the product inside and out.
Take the time to understand the full capability of the application, how it was intended to be used by the designers and how the product can be configured to meet your needs.
Take the time to understand and re-think your business processes.
Do not set a firm schedule until you complete the analysis phase of the project. Make sure you get your analysis phase right or you could spend the rest of your time and money implementing a sub-optimal solution.
